Will band be available for 9th graders next year?

Yes, band will be available for 9th graders next year.

What courses will be offered in the 2021-2022 school year?

Our current course offerings can be found here: GHS Course Offerings. It is important to note that student interest and enrollment will determine which courses will run in the 2021-2022 school year. Not all offered courses will run in 2021-2022.

Will my students high school credits from other PWCS schools be accepted?

Yes, those credits will automatically transfer over with the student. School counselors will work with students to ensure that students are on track for graduation and meeting their chosen pathway requirements (if applicable).

Will there be at JROTC program?

The Armed Forces has a limited number of programs they allow active at a certain time; currently there are no programs available. This may be pursued later, depending on student interest.

Will there be Gifted/SIGNET services offered?

Yes, we will offer those services.

General Information

When the school opens, which grade levels will be included?

There will be 9th and 10th graders (current 8th and 9th graders), and 11th graders (current 10th) will have a one-time choice. That one-time choice will be indicated by affected families in a survey sent by PWCS Communication on 12/4/2020. That survey will close 12/11/2020. There will be no senior class for the 2021-2022 school year.

How do I know if I am zoned for GHS?

PWCS has a school finder tool that will allow you to enter your home address and see where your student is zoned for the 2021-2022 school year. That tool can be found here: PWCS Find Your School tool

Will rising 11th graders who chose to stay at their current high school in the one-time survey have transportation provided?

Yes, rising 11th graders who are zoned for GHS but opt to stay at their current high school will have transportation provided.

Will devices be provided for students?

Yes, all PWCS high school students will be provided devices.

Which diplomas will be offered by GHS?

We opted to homeschool our student for the 2020-2021 school year. How do we enroll them at GHS for the 2021-2022 school year?

In April 2021, students new or returning to PWCS will be able to enroll for next year. Information on required documentation and dates will be posted at a later date on the GHS Counseling page: GHS Counseling Page

Will there be a greenhouse?

Yes, we are excited to see how our school community plans to use this space.

What is the capacity of GHS?

GHS is built to serve 2,557 students, and we anticipate starting the 2021-2022 school year with about 1,500 students. We will grow steadily as we add Seniors and more students.

Special Education

What will Special Education look like at GHS?

Student IEPs will guide the services offered by the GHS Special Education program.

When will IEP transition meetings occur?

That will vary school by school, but we would anticipate those occurring prior to the end of the 2020-2021 School Year.

Can students change pathways?

If a student identifies a new pathway in which they are interested, they will need to be in conversation with their school counselor, teacher advisors, and parent/guardians to determine what is the best fit for the student. A consideration to be made about a pathway change will be the viability of a student completing a new pathway. For example, is there enough time for the student to complete the new pathway.

Can students take more than one pathway?

Yes, students can take more than one as long as they have room in their schedule and are still on track towards meeting graduation requirements. Transfer students need to ensure they are meeting the requirements for their selected transfer pathway.

My student is zoned for GHS. Do they need to apply for a specialty pathway?

No, students who are zoned for GHS do not need to apply for a pathway.

Are students required to take AP courses?

No, students are not required to take AP courses. There are four pathways require at least 2 AP courses be taken for pathway completion as they closely align with graduation requirements. Those pathways are: World Language & Culture; Mathematics; Science; and History and Political Science.

My rising junior is zoned for GHS. Do they have to complete a pathway?

No, rising juniors in the 2021-2022 school year will not be required to complete a pathway. If they are interested in attempting and have the schedule space to do so, they are welcome to attempt one.

What are the transferrable pathways?

Student who are not zoned for GHS can apply for transfer for the following programs: Biomedical Science; Engineering, Design, & Construction; and Mathematics. However, there are base school restrictions on who can apply”

· Biomedical Science: Battlefield High School, Brentsville District High School, Patriot High School, and Unity Reed High School

· Engineering, Design, & Construction: Battlefield High School, Osbourn Park High School, and Unit Reed High School.

· Mathematics: Battlefield High School, Brentsville District High School, Patriot High School, and Unity Reed High School

What do the asterisks mean on the pathway descriptions?

The asterisks indicate for which pathways students can transfer to GHS.

Student Activities & Athletics

Will there be varsity sports next year at GHS?

We intend to offer varsity in all sports, except for football in 2021-2022.

Which student clubs will be offered at GHS?

Student activities will be determined by student interest. We will share a process for how to start a club once the school year begins.

Will there be a National Honor Society?

Yes, there will be.

What will the athletic fields look like?

We will update our athletics page on the GHS website with pictures of our facilities as they become available.

Transportation

Which students will be able to walk to GHS?

Transportation decisions will be made as we get closer to GHS opening in August 2021. We encourage you to watch the PWCS Transportation tool for more information: PWCS Transportation Page. Preliminary bus schedules will also be listed in Parent VUE and Student VUE.
