Gainesville High School Families,
Our fall sports season is underway, and while we anticipate seeing many of you at home football games, I’d encourage everyone to stop by for field hockey, golf, cross county, or one of our scrappy volleyball matches – always exciting. GHS student athletes are representing the Cardinal nation well so far, and everyone is hoping the football team will score another win this Friday evening as we welcome Woodbridge High School. If you missed the school status message sent yesterday, however, there are a few reminders for anyone planning to come on campus for a game this fall.
Tickets must be purchased online through the HometownTicketing site. With the Evolv system in place at the stadium gate, I recommend you purchase tickets in advance to help move lines along before the game.
As you prepare to pass through the Evolv safety screening system, please refrain from bringing items into the stadium that may be flagged and remember to adhere to the “no bag” policy in place across PWCS. Keys, wallets, and cell phones are allowed, but large metal objects will not pass through without being flagged. Feel free to bring a stadium seat. Those can be passed around the screening system.
Please also keep in mind that all middle school students must be supervised by a parent or guardian in order to attend athletic events at Gainesville High School. I look forward to seeing everyone out at the game tomorrow night.
Some additional reminders this week include:
Adjusting Announcement Settings
Parents who follow our GHS Canvas pages have probably noticed an uptick in announcements recently – many of which might not apply to you or your student(s). While we are working to limit outgoing informational messages to one per day, if you would like to reduce the number of notifications you receive from Canvas, please follow along with Mr. Nemerow’s instructional video to make the easy adjustment to your settings. https://youtu.be/taecbTD7Eec?feature=shared
Library Restrictions
Similarly, parents can now create accounts to limit their students’ access to certain library books or media content. To do so, please follow the instructions in the embedded link here.
Senior Information Night
Gainesville High School will be hosting a Senior Information Night on Thursday, September 19th , 6:00-7:30 pm. Full information can be found on the GHS website.
Digital Readiness Check
GVHS will be conducting the Digital Readiness Check during advisory on Wednesday September 18 for all ninth, tenth, and eleventh graders. This is in preparation for the October 9 PSAT. It is important that students are in school that day and have their PWCS device fully charged.
Student Photos
Underclassmen pictures will take place on Friday, October 4 and Monday, October 7. A link will be shared in the coming days allowing students/families the opportunity to purchase portraits.
Senior picture makeup Session C will take place on Monday, October 21 and Tuesday, October 22. A link will be sent in the coming weeks to allow students the opportunity to sign up for a scheduled time to be photographed.
Student Vision Profile
Last school year, PWCS released the Student Vision Profile (SVP). This plan is a resource that compiled the many surveys and activities students have completed throughout high school to prepare for life after graduation. Counselors will be reviewing the SVP with seniors during their senior interviews and with underclassmen during academic advising this coming winter. The SVP can be found in Parent & Student VUE under Documents. More information can be found on the PWCS website.
PWCS Family Engagement Sessions
PWCS offers information sessions on many topics throughout the year. This includes one on the PSAT September 19; this is a great opportunity for families to learn more about this assessment. Registration information can be found on the Family Engagement Series site.
Therapy Dogs
Therapy dogs will be visiting GHS on October 22, November 19, December 17, January 21 (Teacher workday/staff visit), February 18, March 18, April 22, and May 20. The therapy dogs will be stationed outside of the Red Commons during lunch from 10:30-12:30. Should you have any concerns about your child interacting with the therapy dogs, please contact the School Social Worker, Mr. Jahanian, by email at [email protected] or by phone at (571) 248-3372 so that a specific plan can be made to prevent therapy dog interaction with your child.
How To Start A Club
If your student is looking to start a club, they should find a staff member willing to become their sponsor. Your student and the sponsor will complete a (non-school sponsored or school sponsored) application and submit to either the main office or Janeth Luna (room 1511). Once submitted, the application will go through an approval process. Once approved, the sponsor should receive an email noting that club activities can begin. The deadline for applications is September 15, 2024. Any questions or concerns, reach out to Aubrey Quigley, Assistant Director of Student Activities, at [email protected].
